Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
