European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to cut security grants to local governments which resist specific federal immigration rules. The judge ruled the case was “another example” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the new year, alongside an ongoing border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept dozens of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, following concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Experts point out that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
