The US Justice Department has entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to block the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the major counterpunch by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
