Australia's captain Poised for a Key Part in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, aside from the back issue, but further aspects," he commented.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the series.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
